How to Use a Troche

Troches (pronounced trō-key) are flavored, medicated lozenges that easily dissolve in the mouth. Troches are placed in the mouth between the gum and the cheek

(buccal) or under the tongue (sublingual). This route of administration allows medication to enter the bloodstream directly from the mouth. It allows for a quicker onset of action while bypassing metabolism in the liver.

How do I use a troche?

Step 1: Place the troche under your tongue or in the cheek cavity, between your cheek and gums. Read the directions on your prescription label to

determine the placement.

Step 2: Leave the troche until it dissolves completely, approximately 15-30 minutes.

It is recommended to change the placement of the troche in the mouth

each time to improve absorption.

Helpful Tips

• Troches can be cut in half or quarters.

• Troches take approximately 15-30 minutes to dissolve completely. This time can be sped up by having a hot drink prior to administration.

• At least 4-5 different spots in the mouth can be used – either cheek or under each side of the tongue.

• Wait at least 15 minutes to eat or drink after the troche has completely dissolved.

• Do not swallow or chew the troche before it dissolves and it is important not to eat, drink, or go to sleep with a troche in your mouth as it may not have enough time to get absorbed and work properly.

• Keep troches in a cool, dry place.

Troches are not the best route of administration for all medications. Ask one of our pharmacists if troches are right for your personalized treatment

plan.
