Curcumin

Curcumin is isolated from the plant, Curcuma longa. This plant is more commonly known as Turmeric. It has widely been used as a spice in cooking but is also used for medicinal purposes. Traditionally, it was used to promote proper digestion. In recent years, it has been studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Antioxidant

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals in the body. If free radicals are not neutralized, then they can wreak havoc on our cells by destroying proteins, cells, and DNA.

Anti-inflammatory

Curcumin can also inhibit inflammatory processes in the body. It blocks enzymes in the body that produce an inflammatory response.

Inflammation plays an important role in our bodies. It helps fight off foreign invaders and plays a role in repairing damage in our bodies. However, when inflammation becomes chronic, it can lead to other issues because it can start to attack our own tissues. Scientists believe that chronic, low-level inflammation plays a role in heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. Recent studies have also found that curcumin supplements may provide relief for arthritis pain.

Before adding a new supplement, always check with your doctor or pharmacist for any possible interactions with the medications, vitamins, and supplements that your are currently taking.
